Our Head Coach is David Knight and he is supported by his decidated group of talented assistants. David and his team offer coaching for all ages and levels of player in an environment that suits them (private lessons, groups, acadmies or adult active sessions).

Junior Coaching 

 

GROUP OPTIONS

 

Beginners: A great intro to tennis for newbies and those coming to grips with the game. Players will learn all strokes and use games to cement this learning as well as make it enjoyable for all participants. Tues: 3.30 – 4.15, Weds: 3.30 – 4.15, Thurs: 3.30 – 4.15. Note: We endeavour to place older beginners (10+) separate to younger ones where possible.

Little Hitters: This group has been designed for those players ready to move from a beginner group who exhibit consistency in getting their shots over the net. Groundstrokes, volleys, and serve technique will be a focus through specific rally drills. Tues: 4.15 – 5pm, Weds: 4.15 – 5pm, Thurs: 4.15 – 5pm.

Big Hitters and Interclub Team Training: This group is designed for those players at an interclub level (can rally and get a serve in the service box minimum). Technique, footwork, strategies & match play will be a focus. A fun class with lots of game play drills. Mon: 5.00 – 5.45, Tues: 5 – 5.45, Weds: 5.00 – 5.45, Thurs 5.00 – 5.45 & 5.45 – 6.30.

For Interclub training: Can be exclusive to the team with a full team enrolled. Coach will work on team work, match-play, and doubles strategies.

 

Group sessions are $108 per player for an 8 lesson term.

 

ACADEMY

 

Island Bay Academy: Ideal for serious and highly competitive players. Sessions will be very much rally-based looking at different tactical scenarios. Participation by invite or application. Player placement in academies is at David's discretion based upon a range of factors. Please contact him to discuss. Wednesdays and Thursdays.

 

PRIVATE LESSONS

 

Focusing on technique & aspects of the game needing improvement. Max of two players per private lesson during peak hours (3pm-7pm). Very limited availability during peak hours.

 

Junior Coaching sessions are for Club Members only.  If you are not yet a member and new to coaching, David can provide two 'trial' coaching sessions (on a pay per session basis) before club membership sign up.  Details and pricing about membership can be found on our club membership page.

 

Now available from February 2016:

For 5 and 6 year olds new to tennis we can offer the option of Junior Coaching without club membership for one term. This allows young kids a chance to give tennis a go without the commitment of club membership sign up. This does not include access to courts outside of coaching sessions or to junior club day on Fridays.

 

 

 

Adult Coaching

 

Active Sessions: These are a great session for newbies or experienced players. With a maximum of 8 players per courts, fun drills, doubles point play & fitness will be involved. Please let David know if you wish to enrol to secure your place in these sessions otherwise extra places will be filled on a first-in first served basis. See times below:

Mens Active Evening session: Monday: 6 – 7pm. MEMBERS ONLY Cost: $10 per session (on demand)

Ladies Active Evening session: Tuesday: 6.15 – 7.15 pm. MEMBERS ONLY Cost: $10 per session

Ladies Active Morning Session: Friday 9.30 – 10.30am. Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non-members.

 

Other Group or Private coaching sessions can be arranged on request.

 

More about David

David played competitively as a junior in Christchurch before moving up to Wellington to pursue tertiary study. During this time he worked his way to becoming the Head Coach at the Thorndon Club as well as completing his studies. He took over the Island Bay Head Coach position in 2014.

David's coaching achievements include; coaching two Central junior rep teams to National titles, in 2014 he coached 10 Wellington rep players, coaching a New Zealand rep player, the youngest ever ATPCA level 3 qualified coach after completing this course in Sydney 2012 and he has travelled as far as Florida as part of the coaching development of one of his players.
