Junior Squash @ Island Bay Tennis and Squash Club 2015

Junior Club Day

Junior club day is on most Fridays during school terms from 3:30 to 5:00pm.

Junior Club day has a squash focus over autumn and winter (terms 2 and 3) and a tennis focus in spring and summer (terms 4 and 1). However kids can do either or both sports on any club day throughout the year (weather permitting). There is also table tennis, fusball, and TV movies/cartoons available to help keep the kids entertained. Please note that juniors attending will be expected to take part in a sport!

As we don't have high levels of supervision, only children from the age of 8 may attend without a guardian. Any younger attendees must have an accompanying guardian.

Juniors can bring one non-member guest if they wish ($5 charge for non-members).

Anyone attending should bring with them: racquets (we have a few that can be borrowed), afternoon snack (optional), money for drinks (optional), participatory attitude and best behaviour (compulsory!)

The purpose of Junior Club Day is to give junior access to the courts to have friendly games with each other without the need to plan and book in advance.  From time to time we will have senior members and teenage members on hand to run non-professional sessions on court with small groups.

Junior Squash Programme

The Junior Squash Programme will run from 4.30 to 5.30pm each Wednesday throughout terms 2 and 3.

All new and prospective juniors are welcome to enrol for this programme. You won't need to buy gear if you're trying squash for the first time as the club has some spare racquets.

The programme, which has been developed by Squash NZ specifically for juniors, will be run by our current professional squash coach Gary Aukett and costs $80 per term.

We encourage all of our juniors to have a go at squash.  Contrary to what you may have been told, learning to play squash does not ruin your tennis.  In fact it will help you to maintain or improve your fitness; it will certainly improve your explosiveness on the court, and it will enhance your tactical appreciation of both games.  If you want to see the evidence of this simply look at the club honours board and you’ll see that we have had players who have been the tennis and squash club champions at the same time.  Two examples are Tony Naughton and our current men’s tennis champion Chris Roy.

Tournaments are run throughout the winter season. Information about tournaments will be e-mailed out as they arise. We definitely recommend all new players enter tournaments as it gives children an opportunity to put everything they have learnt into practice.

No visitor nor practice rights. No access to courts or facilities unless with an adult - this is a health and safety requirement.

Key tags for junior players aged under 14 years are issued in the child's name to the child’s guardian.  That guardian is responsible for ensuring the child is supervised by an adult at all times whilst at the club.
